Philly couples therapist

Emma Carpenter, LMFT - Philadelphia therapist

If you’re landing here you’re probably feeling disconnected from the people who matter most—your partner, your family, even yourself. Communication has broken down, past wounds keep resurfacing, and you’re stuck in the same painful cycles.I'm Emma, and helping people untangle exactly that is what I do.

Why I became a therapist

I learned early to be perfect, stay small, and not need too much — and spent years not fully understanding why I kept repeating patterns I didn't want in my relationships and my sense of self. I've navigated depression, difficult relationships, and only recently, an ADHD diagnosis that reframed a lot of my story. It took finding a therapist who truly saw me to start actually changing things. I know the kind of courage that takes. That experience is in the room with me every single session.

Who i work with

You’re feeling the strain.

Maybe your relationship is filled with tension, distance, or painful patterns that keep repeating. Perhaps you're stuck in the overwhelm of career pressure, financial stress from student loans, or the weight of delayed life milestones like marriage or starting a family. You may be feeling desperate to finally find the right set of tools to get your ADHD under control. If you grew up with emotionally unavailable parents, you might also be struggling to feel safe in relationships or constantly second-guessing your worth. And you’re adding the idea of parenting which can feel isolating—especially when you’re trying to stay connected with your partner while managing the emotional demands of your kids.

You want something more.

You want to feel close again—to rebuild trust, communicate clearly, and feel secure in your relationship. You want to heal from the past, stop carrying emotional burdens that were never yours, and create healthier patterns moving forward. You want to feel grounded in yourself, confident in your decisions, and supported in your connections with your partner, your family, and your own inner voice. You’re ready for a life that feels safe and emotionally fulfilling.

That’s where I come in.

COUPLES: If you and your partner are stuck in the same argument on repeat, feeling more like roommates than partners, or trying to find your way back after a betrayal, this is the work I love most. I specialize in millennial and modern couples navigating relational stress, life transitions, intimacy challenges, and infidelity recovery. I use the Gottman Method because it's research-backed and actually works, not just conflict management, but real communication and real intimacy. I'm also trained in sex therapy and sexology, so nothing is off the table. I offer an affirming, inclusive space for LGBTQ+ clients and those exploring consensual non-monogamy (ENM). Whatever your relationship looks like, you deserve support that meets you there.

INDIVIDUALS: Modern life is a lot. If you're juggling burnout, ADHD, a nagging sense that something is off, or the long tail of growing up in a home that didn't feel safe, I get it, genuinely. I work with individuals who are ready to stop just coping and start building a life that actually feels like theirs. For those healing from complex trauma or emotionally immature family systems, I use Internal Family Systems (IFS) and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), two approaches that get to the places talk therapy alone sometimes can't reach. We'll build self-compassion, process the pain that's been sitting there, and figure out what lasting change actually looks like for you.

FAMILIES: Families are complicated, and loving each other doesn't automatically make any of it easier. I work with families navigating communication breakdowns, intergenerational patterns that just keep repeating, and the particular tension that comes with parenting mismatches, in-law boundaries, and the shift that happens when kids become adults. A lot of my family work also focuses on the couple at the center of it, because when that relationship is stronger, everything else tends to follow.

How I work

Sessions with me are warm, a little direct, and occasionally funnier than you might expect from therapy because life can be heavy enough. I'll celebrate your wins, call out your patterns with kindness, and give you something concrete to take away — not just something to think about. I also think therapy should feel accessible, so bring your iced coffee, wear your sweats, bring a blanket if that helps. Seriously. Comfort is part of the process and this is a judgement free zone.

I believe our past is not an excuse but it is an explanation — and an important one. Your history, your environment, the things that happened before you had any say in them? They matter. We'll look at all of it together — not to dwell in it, but to understand it. And then we'll figure out what you actually want to do about it. Because once you understand it, you can.

Through our work together, you can look forward to:

  • Increasing your self-esteem and confidence

  • Building secure attachments that make you feel safe within your relationships

  • Healing from past traumas and managing the changes life throws your way

  • Overcoming challenging relationship issues and finding harmony in your connections

I provide appointments at our Philadelphia office along with the option for online sessions for residents of both New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

My rate per 50-minute session is $180 for individuals, $200 for couples; sliding scale available based on need

trainings & education

  • MA Counseling Psychology, concentration in Marriage & Family Therapy

  • Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist in PA & NJ

  • AAMFT Supervisor Candidate

  • Private Practice Consultant: I offer consultation for therapists in Pennsylvania and New Jersey because I spent way too long figuring out the business side of private practice the hard way, and I don’t think you should have to

  • Level 3 Gottman Method Trained: I pursued Gottman training because I wanted a framework grounded in decades of research on what actually makes relationships last, not just intuition

  • EMDR Trained: EMDR training through EMDRIA means my training meets the highest clinical standards in trauma treatment

  • Trauma & Attachment: trauma and attachment is the foundation of almost everything I do, because so much of what brings people to therapy traces back to early experiences of feeling unsafe or unseen

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS): I incorporate Internal Family Systems because it gives clients a language for understanding why they feel so conflicted about their own choices

  • Sex & Sexology: My training in sex therapy and sexology means that part of your relationship or your identity is never off limits, awkward, or too much to bring into the room

  • Eco-Therapy: My eco-therapy training is rooted in the growing body of research showing that time in nature measurably reduces cortisol levels, lowers anxiety, and improves mood in ways that complement and deepen the work we do together in session

  • Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT): ACT gives my clients practical tools for loosening the grip that unhelpful thoughts have, and getting back to living in line with what actually matters to them, because shifting the goal from 'feel better' to 'live better' turns out to be a much more sustainable way to move through hard things
