walk & talk eco-therapy in philadelphia
therapy that moves with you
You probably already know that you feel better after a walk. That your mind and you emotions feel clearer, lighter, after you’ve engaged in physical activities whether that’s at the gym or cleaning around the house. Some people need more than a room and a conversation to really heal. If you have ever sensed that your body needed to be part of the process too, you were right. Walk and talk eco-therapy are for people who want healing that involves the whole person.
A good fit for people who:
Have ADHD and find it hard to stay present in a seated session
Struggle with anxiety and find movement regulating
Experience anxiety or trauma symptoms in their body, not just their thoughts
Have tried traditional therapy and felt something was missing
Want to have a more holistic approach to their healing
Just think better when they are moving or outside
Not everyone does their best thinking sitting still. If the idea of spending 50 minutes across from a therapist in a quiet office sounds more stressful than healing, you are not alone. Walk and talk therapy and eco-therapy offer a different way to do this work. You move, you breathe, you talk. The therapy is real. The setting just looks different.
what is walk & talk therapy?
Walk and talk therapy is exactly what it sounds like. Instead of sitting in a traditional office, you and your therapist meet outside and conduct the session while walking together. The route is agreed on in advance, the pace is yours, and the conversation is the same one that would happen inside.
One thing most people notice immediately is how different it feels to be side by side instead of face to face. That shift in physical positioning reduces the intensity of direct eye contact, which makes it easier for a lot of people to say the things that are hardest to say. Movement itself also helps. When your body is engaged, your nervous system tends to regulate more easily, which means you can often access thoughts and feelings that stay buried when you are seated and still.
Walk and talk is still real, structured therapy. The same confidentiality applies. The same goals are in place. The same therapeutic depth is possible. It is just a different container for the work.
what is eco-therapy?
Eco-therapy is related to walk and talk but distinct. Where walk and talk therapy focuses on movement as the container for the session, eco-therapy is rooted in the intentional use of the natural environment as part of the therapeutic process itself.
There is a growing body of research showing that time in nature measurably reduces cortisol levels, lowers anxiety, and improves mood in ways that complement and deepen traditional therapeutic work. Eco-therapy draws on that research directly. Sessions might include walking, but they can also involve grounding practices, mindfulness exercises, sensory awareness work, or simply the therapeutic benefit of being present in a natural space while doing the hard work of healing.
You do not need to be an outdoors person to benefit. You just need to be open to trying something different.
combined walk & talk eco-therapy
Here is something worth knowing: the most well-researched trauma therapy in the world started on a walk. EMDR was developed after its founder, Francine Shapiro, noticed that processing distressing thoughts while walking seemed to reduce their intensity, and eventually traced that effect back to bilateral stimulation, the rhythmic left-right movement of the body activating both hemispheres of the brain at once. That same science is at the heart of walk and talk therapy. Research also shows that time in natural environments lowers cortisol, reduces rumination, and shifts the nervous system toward regulation in ways that complement everything else happening in a therapy session. Walk and talk and eco-therapy bring all of it together: the regulation that comes from movement, the nervous system benefits of being in nature, and the bilateral stimulation that helps the brain process what words alone sometimes cannot reach. Emma offers these as 90-minute sessions designed to be added alongside regular weekly therapy for clients who want a more holistic, whole-body approach to their healing.
Sessions take place in and around Northern Liberties and nearby neighborhoods including Fairmount Park and The Wissahickon. The office is steps from Penn Treaty Park, the Delaware River waterfront trail, and green spaces throughout Fishtown and Old City. The exact location is discussed during your intake based on your comfort, your goals, and your mobility. All sessions begin with a brief check in on the focus of that day’s session, followed by the walk & talk portion, and end with a grounding ritual to help transition you into the rest of your day.
Routes are chosen with privacy in mind. Emma selects spaces that are not crowded and allow for a real conversation without the concern of being overheard. Sessions are adaptable for different mobility levels. If you have physical limitations, that is worth discussing during your consultation so the format can be tailored to what works for your body.
who walk & talk eco-therapy is for
These formats work particularly well for clients who are already doing individual therapy and want to incorporate movement and nature into some of their sessions. WHat To expect in walk & talk eco-therapy
Planning
You and Emma talk through whether walk and talk eco-therapy is the right fit, what locations feel comfortable, any physical considerations, and what you want to get out of the format. Before your first outdoor session, you agree on a meeting spot, a general route, and a backup plan for weather. Nothing is left to chance
What to bring
Whatever you would bring for a casual walk around your neighborhood. Comfortable shoes and clothes, a water bottle, maybe a snack. No special gear required. For those with a chill, well behaved pup, feel free to bring your furry friend along! Pets are a perfect addition to the holistic work we do in these sessions
The Session
You walk, you talk, you do the work. Sessions follow the same structure and therapeutic depth as in-office sessions. The difference is the setting, not the substance. You’ll check in on your goals for that day, practice a few minutes of mindfulness, and begin your walk. You may make a few stops along the way if needed
Closing
Sessions end with a few minutes to ground, meditate, reflect, and integrate before you head back into your day. This transition time matters and is built into every outdoor session which is why a 90 minute session is recommended. We want to make sure you’re getting the most out of your session.
Meet your walk & talk therapist
Emma Carpenter LMFT
I started offering walk and talk sessions because I noticed something in my own life long before I noticed it in my clients: I process better when I am outside in nature. The research on nature and nervous system regulation is real and compelling, but so is the simpler truth that some people just cannot get to the good stuff sitting in an office.
Frequently asked questions
-
Walk and talk sessions can be adapted. Not every outdoor session has to involve a long walk. Sitting in a park, strolling slowly, or finding a natural space that feels accessible to you are all options. Bring up any physical considerations during your consultation and the format will be built around what works for your body.
-
You will never lose a session to rain. If the weather does not cooperate, you can move inside to the office, switch to a virtual session for that week, or reschedule. Emma will follow up before any outdoor session if the forecast looks uncertain.
-
Select outdoor sessions can be incorporated into couples work on a case-by-case basis. It is not the default format for couples therapy but can be a meaningful addition at certain points in the process. Ask about it during your consultation if it interests you.
