Virtual Therapy in Pennsylvania and New Jersey: Does Online Therapy Actually Work?
If you have been thinking about therapy but keep running into the same obstacle, whether that is a schedule that makes weekly in-person appointments nearly impossible, a location that puts you far from good options, or simply the preference to do this from the privacy of your own home, virtual therapy is worth understanding seriously.
At Better Connections Therapy, we offer virtual therapy for individuals, couples, and families throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey. And the most common question we hear from people considering it is the most reasonable one: does it actually work?
The short answer is yes. Here is the longer one.
What the Research Actually Says
Online therapy has been studied extensively, particularly since 2020 accelerated its adoption significantly. The research is consistent and fairly clear: for most people and most presenting concerns, virtual therapy produces outcomes that are equivalent to in-person therapy.
Studies on anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship issues, and ADHD have all shown that teletherapy works. EMDR, which many people assume requires in-person presence, has also been validated for online delivery. The therapeutic relationship, which is the single strongest predictor of therapy outcomes, builds just as effectively through a screen.
What Virtual Therapy Is Actually Like
You log in from wherever you are. Your home, your car, your office with the door closed. You do not need to commute, find parking, or sit in a waiting room. The session itself looks and feels much like an in-person session. You can see each other, talk in real time, and do the same work you would do face to face.
For couples, both partners are in the same video call, ideally in the same physical space but sometimes from separate locations if schedules require it. For families, virtual therapy can actually make it easier to get everyone in the room since no one has to coordinate transportation.
Who Virtual Therapy Works Especially Well For
Virtual therapy tends to be a particularly strong fit for:
• People with demanding work schedules who cannot reliably make midday or early evening in-person appointments
• Parents of young children who cannot easily leave the house for an hour at a time
• People who live in suburban or rural areas of Pennsylvania or New Jersey without easy access to specialized therapists
• Couples where partners travel for work or have conflicting schedules
• People with social anxiety for whom the idea of walking into a new office is its own barrier • Anyone who simply processes better in the comfort and privacy of their own space
When In-Person Might Be a Better Fit
Virtual therapy is not always the right choice. If you are navigating a significant mental health crisis, if you live in a space that does not feel private or safe, or if you find that being at home makes it harder to be present and focused, in-person sessions may serve you better. Our Northern Liberties Philadelphia office is available for clients who prefer to come in.
For most people, the format matters far less than the quality of the therapist and the fit of the therapeutic approach. What we have found is that clients who might have avoided therapy entirely because of logistical barriers are now getting real, meaningful support because virtual made it accessible.
